Windows

I’ve been drawn to windows as subjects since I began making images. One of the things that drove me to draw and paint after being a photographer for a number of years was the difficulty in photographing windows from inside, grappling with film’s inability to record equally both the interior light and the brighter light beyond the window panes. The license inherent in the older image-making mediums allows me to create a world where inside and outside are balanced by our sense of them and they are no longer separate places.

This group of paintings intends to explore the window as a familiar symbol of promise and mystery, as well as offering more metaphorical interpretations of the window as a plane where our interior life, our mind, meets our physical experience and our perceptions.
